Spring Couture 2012: Elie Saab
Some fairytales do come true – especially if they have anything to do with Elie Saab’s Spring Couture 2012 collection. For several seasons, the Lebanese designer’s gowns have been going from the runway to making magic on the red carpet. By the looks of it, this couture line will also result in plenty of appearances. Any one of the gorgeous dresses could easily take a celebrity to the top of the best-dressed list.
Saab was in the mood for romantic pastels this couture season; the runway became a fantasy wonderland of white, mint green, peach, nude, yellow, blue and pink gowns. The soft rainbow palette created mini sets within the collections, each boasting spectacular variations of the fit-and-flare minidresses, slinky column gowns and full-skirted princess styles. The silhouettes were each made unique by deepening the necklines, altering hemlines and train lengths, and adding or taking away the sleeves.

The sparkling gowns were the result of dedicated craft – proper couture. Appearing in gauzy lace, tulle and chiffon, they seemed to float down the runway weightlessly. Sparkles shimmered from hand-stitched beads and paillettes patterned as leaves and blossoms, subtle embellishment, or all-over cascading effects. The stunning looks were completed with thin, monochrome ribbon bow belts.
Saving the best for last, Saab’s grand finale was a wedding gown fit for royalty. In delicate white and pink, the princess-style gown featured an oversized botanical print – which also appeared in the mint set – on a structured bodice completed with a full skirt. The model bride was styled with a long veil that blended in with the gown’s train.

Saab’s collection was as dreamy as it was easily wearable. The colors and silhouettes were flattering, elegant and minus the fuss of overdone looks. They formed a Cinderella moment just waiting to happen.
