New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: Rag & Bone
Rag & Bone has become a lifestyle brand with a heart and soul of leather and cool tailoring. For designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, the relaxed vibe comes quite naturally, and Pre-Fall was a perfect example. The interim collection featured a themeless assortment of all things desirable to the Rag & Bone girl: leather jackets, tie-dyed separates and blazers. The designers stuck with that notion again for their New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 collection; only this time, the line displayed a theme of Indian and British influences.

The vibe was indeed a minor one, not appearing prominently in the collection. What was conspicuous was the intense layering, enough to weather any winter snowstorm. Presented in subtle colors of black, white, gray and army green with bold uses of red, the patchwork of patterns and textures piled on one another stole the show. Wallpaper floral separates were contrasted with fur vests or leather-sleeve coats. Cutaway jackets in wool blanket stripes were topped with motorcycle vests and cinched at the waist with military style belts. Zigzag and crochet sweater skirts and dresses were pieced over layers of leggings and thigh-high legwarmers and often finished off with two pieces of dissimilar outerwear.
The effect created upper silhouettes on the heavy side, but Wainwright and Neville balanced the looks with streamlined bottoms such as fitted yet slouchy draped paisley chiffon pants, tailored riding pants with button cuff details and slinky skirts. Sturdy ankle boots, either laced-up or with gore insets, completed the silhouettes.

Each look had plenty of eye interest and with the assortment of patterns and materials, the collection could have resulted in a flustered feel. But when it comes to layering, Wainwright and Neville are experts – this wasn’t exactly their first Fall outing. It was, however, more impressive than the last.
