NYFW S/S 14: 7 New Faces to Grace the Manhattan Runways
As New York Fashion Week quickly approaches, we all wait in anticipation for the latest collections to debut. Established in their own right, there will be some new kids on the block this year showing for the first time at NYFW! Get to know these 7 designers and don’t miss their inspiring collections on the runways this season.
Dedicated to the strong, the obscure and the beautiful, sass & bide is the namesake label of Sarah-Jane Clarke (sass) and Heidi Middleton (bide). Their personal sense of style is defined by a sense of free-spirited confidence and contradiction, which provided the inspiration for the initial denim collection over a decade ago. Offering a full range of women’s ready-to-wear, denim and accouterment collections, sass & bide will open their first New York flagship store this year.
Friends from UC Berkeley, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon founded Opening Ceremony in 2002 as a place to share their passions for travel, art and fashion. Taking its name and mission statement from the Olympic games, the brand adopts a multinational approach to retail. What began as a single store in New York has turned into a global community with collaborations featuring numerous brands including Rodarte, Pendleton and Maison Martin Margiela.
Founded in 1994, the iconic British brand, All Saints, thrives on a culture of design, inspiration and innovation and opportunities that enable individualism. With a strong connection to popular culture and the music industry, the brand named after a famous street in London, has collaborated with numerous musical acts including U2 and Kings of Leon. Known for offering sharp edge, directional clothing with muted palettes, the brand has been described variously as “British chic rock ‘n’ roll.”
After creating dresses and selling them at markets in Sydney, sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann joined forces in 1991 to create a line fusing fashion with swimwear. Their resort-style clothing evokes the laid-back yet cosmopolitan vibe of their hometown, Sydney, Australia. Look for beautiful floral prints, ultra-feminine styles and soft draping in their ready-to-wear, swimwear and lingerie collections.
After flourishing at J. Crew for over a decade, Korea born, Marissa Webb was able to exemplify her individual style at the launch of her label at Spring 2013 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. With a lifelong creative relationship with fashion, her design aesthetic blends elements of nature and architecture by mixing structured pieces with whimsical flow. Her collections aim to appeal to women who appreciate timeless fashion, but also have the confidence to mix in unexpected pieces.
Australian native, Dion Lee, finds inspiration in the construction of clothing. By morphing traditional tailoring techniques with experimental treatments, he is known for cutting-edge garments that are also highly functional. Working women seek out sharp jackets from his collections while the going out type opt for inventive cocktail looks. In 2012, Lee put his stamp on the map when he was awarded the International Woolmark Prize for the Australian region.
Based in Barcelona and born in 1984, Desigual was founded by 20-year-old Thomas Meyer, who envisioned a future in which people would dress in affordable clothing that generated positive feelings. Emphasizing tolerance, positivism, innovation and fun, there is never a shortage of bold, colorful and graphic elements to the collections. Each season, the design team prepares over 1,000 items built around a unified concept.
