LFW Spring 2012: The Wedge
New York runways may have shown tamed down, simple single soles, but at London Fashion Week, they marched to their own beat – in platform wedges. Sky-high versions were a favorite for designers and for fashionistas, who love the height with the bonus of comfort. With tribal and African themes everywhere, bright colors, exotic snakeskin and natural materials such as raffia and jute rope allowed wedges to receive the full treatment for Spring 2012.

Designers gave the block silhouette a fresh makeover by using contrasting colors and textures for a pop of eye candy. Wedges were wrapped in colorful, braided wovens; striped raffia; graphic tribal prints and bright snakeskin. Colorblock techniques made their way into footwear as Mulberry changed things up by covering midsoles in jute rope, and Jaeger London and Jonathan Saunders exaggerated the platform with two-tone colors.

Wedges this season came in sashed-up, bootie, mary jane and strappy versions. Burberry Prorsum took the wedge in two directions. Raffia loafers with leather details and tied-up booties proved to be more forward while sandal versions with thick braided straps and beaded ankle-straps stayed on the traditional side. Jaeger London’s wedges and flatforms of reptilian, leather and espadrille boasted a simple vamp pattern with a rounded, asymmetrical strap. Johnathan Saunders choose grosgrain ribbon sash-tie ups for a girly, flirty look, while complex mary janes were shown by Mulberry in yellow patent leather, green snakeskin and tan leather.

The easy-to-wear wedge dominated another Spring runway with its versatility. Try a simple strapped pair with a sheer maxiskirt and a sweater for a chic look or a bootie version with a trench coat for something London-inspired.
