Spring 2013 runway trends: midriff-baring and high-waisted silhouettes

The midriff of the ‘30s and ‘40s is back and popping up on the Spring 2013 runways paired with high-waisted pants and skirts. The daring silhouette of this combo recalls the ‘90s as it elongates the body and leaves just a provocative sliver of skin. Spring 2012 saw a similar styling approach but with hot shorts instead. The updated 2013 version proves to be edgier and sleeker, not to mention more wearable. For the look, designers created bra-inspired tops and fitted cropped shapes, often with varying styles of halter necklines or simple straps. Pants were loose while skirts took on pencil characteristics, both balancing out the profile.

Nicolas Ghesquière went sensual for Balenciaga on the Paris Spring 2013 runway. Skin was the story this season with endless legs and of course, peeks of the midriff. The opening look set the tone with a white molded bra cutout top paired with well-tailored high-waisted trousers and lace-up loafers. Similar ensembles had waistcoats or blazers layered over the midriff top.

Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing was on the same silhouette track as Ghesquière. While the Parisian designer continued his Miami/Cuban theme, the ‘90s shape appeared with a tough edge. Rousteing’s interpretation included a ruched crossover halter midriff combined with slightly baggy high-waisted leather pants. Simple leather bandeaus were also worked in with the pant or chic, waist-defining miniskirts.

Cushnie Et Ochs’s Spring collection was all about the curves. In nearly every look, dresses and skirts inspired by Filipino fashion staples hugged the body in the most flattering way. On board with the concept, designers Michelle Ochs and Carly Cushnie’s halter athletic-inspired top was matched up with a high-waisted pencil skirt and completed with classic heeled sandals. The look was clean and effortless.
