Spring 2013 runway trends: halter necklines

Offering a fresh look on the New York Spring 2013 runways, halters are the key neckline of the season. The high-neck cutaway silhouette is modern with an activewear aesthetic inspired by swimwear. Sheath dresses and tops displayed the neckline with variations from jewel or high-necks, reverse racer-back shapes, strap ties, exposed zippers, cross-front or draped cowl styles. With a change of the collar line, designers easily updated traditional or dated pieces and provided skin-baring options for the new Spring season.

While the majority of Proenza Schouler’s collection displayed boxy looks created from collaged squares of exotic skins, the latter ensembles of photoprints were lean and streamlined, partly due to the halter neckline. Unique knee-length dresses crafted from biased-cut strips of photoprint boasted brilliant colors and the design duo’s extra high-neck halter with a contrasting black collar that accentuated the shoulders.

Contrary to the vibrancy in Proenza Schouler’s collection, Alexander Wang delivered a colorless assortment with a glow-in-the-dark surprise. Yet, the designers were on the same page about the new neckline. Wang presented a jewel collar style with a cutout illusion that proposed a futuristic edge on his sexy dresses. The Spring looks also displayed crossover techniques.

Richard Chai Love mixed things up by creating crop tops with the athletic silhouette. The deep-cut shape sports contrasting floral and mesh materials and is reminiscent of bikinis. The New York designer had a more playful appeal, pairing the tops with high-waisted fit-and-flare skirts.
