Spring 2012 Trends: Lace
Across the Spring runways, designers were enthusiastic about lace, but not in the prim and proper way we’ve seen before. The material received a modern update with cool color effects of brights and neons and even a sporty attitude. Dresses, tops, jackets and shorts were crafted from fine to heavyweight laces, in relaxed and structured silhouettes, and shown in allover styles. Layered over contrasted shades or with skin-peeking styles, modern lace is an inspiring trend for the season.
A.L.C.’s Emmie top hints just the right amount of skin. The crewneck puckered stretch-lace top features an exposed back zip and short sleeves. Combine the sheer top over a white bandeau for a fresh feel or a pop of color for a flirtier tone. The Emmie paired with white pants and sandals is the essence of Spring.
Honeydew never looked so chic. Diane von Furstenberg’s warner dress boasts a unique flower lace in the melon shade. The scoop-neck short-sleeve style is contrasted against gauze trim at the hem and cuffs. Complete the look with thin-strap multi-colored stilettos.
Feminine and classy, DKNY’s lace peplum dress was inspired by a 1940’s silhouette. The yoke boasts a semi-sheer texture while the rest of the dress is fitted with a slip lining. Maintain the ladylike vibe with pointed toe pumps and a statement bag.
For something playful and girly, Free People miles of lace tank dress in hot pink may be right up your alley. The stretch-lace dress with a scoop-neck is fully lined in pink to match. Style the dress with a tan leather jacket for those chilly summer nights and finish the look with a fun turquoise peep toe.

Ellery’s Celtic lace tee highlights Chantilly lace contrasted against short leather sleeves. The black and white sheer top takes an edgy route when combined with leather pants, killer platforms and a chic blazer.
Teal is an unexpected color for lace, but in Nicholas’ Becky long-sleeve dress it feels just right. The crochet lace dress in the classic silhouette is detailed with contrast cream lining and scalloped eyelash hems. Keep it simple with a pair of thin strappy sandals and a zippered clutch for a night out.
Robert Rodriguez’s must-have lace top is as fierce as it is romantic. In a cobalt blue, the short-sleeve style has a summery feel joined with white pants or a pencil skirt. For a bold idea, style with a sunny yellow blazer.
