Shopbop celebrates Spring 2012 with five key trends
Spring is officially eight days away, and while there may be a few more days of layering ahead before the sun really heats things up, there’s no reason not to start getting inspired and thinking about what to wear. And since Spring is the season for rebirth, why not try something new? Luckily, Shopbop is celebrating the arrival of the season all week with exciting daily editorial features revealing the biggest must-have trends of Sport, White, French Tomboy, Color and Prints – one for each day of the week.
The fun started today with the Sport trend that was seen on the runway of several designers including Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone. No, it doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym. Rather, designers got physical by taking a few cues from jerseys and sporting uniforms to freshen up simple silhouettes of tops and dresses with unexpected mesh, perforated materials and playful striped prints in thick or thin variations. Embrace the trend by pairing loose tops like Alexander Wang’s summer windbreaker with form-fitting bottoms such as Rag & Bone’s slim neoprene skirt.

Switching from Winter to Spring means switching from black to white. Designers went breezy, sleek and chic with Tuesday's White trend and even paired white on white for the freshest styling. Ensembles are perfectly versatile and can go from relaxed white Saturday afternoons in loose trousers to crisp white Sunday brunch in the Cushnie et Ochs graphic shape dress.
The French Tomboy on Wednesday is the elegant style of mixing rich, luxe materials with masculine silhouettes. Imagine the loose silk Equipment blouse or Sonia Rykiel linen top combined with Alice & Olivia wide leg pants and finished with a Vince blazer to pull it all together. The French Tomboy is inspired by the relaxed feminine shapes of the 1920s and rediscovers dropped waistlines, as seen in Jil Sander’s collection.

If you are still in winter hibernating mode or suffering from the blues, Thursday's Color trend is your answer. Seen on the Spring runways of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Herve Leger and Preen, bold blues, vibrant reds, bright yellows and lushy greens make for fun apparel and accessories. Mix up the vivid colors, play it out in monochrome or use as an extra pop of color to burst into Spring. Consider blue blazers, green pleated skirts, yellow knits and red clutches for a new wardrobe.
Saving the best and most important for Friday, the Print trend is absolutely necessary for the season. In small or large repeats, floral or graphic, prints add an easy vibrancy and interest to ensembles. They can be styled individually to take the spotlight as seen at Diane von Furstenburg or combined together for a true summery feel.
