Resort 2013: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs can do grunge just as well as he can do glamorous couture. Getting a little down and dirty for the Marc by Marc Jacobs line, the seasoned designer wasn’t going for pretty in his music-festival-themed Resort 2013 collection. The whimsical looks – modeled by Australian Bambi Northwood-Blyth, who’s look effortlessly embraces edgy grunginess, and Ondria Hardin – were composed with a surplus of prints and patterns, torn denim, socks with pumps, layered pieces, headphones and dramatic colored extensions. It was the unofficial guide to looking cool at Glastonbury, Coachella or South by Southwest.

Prints and patterns come as no surprise for this designer. This time around, stripes in thick and thin variations were marked across lightweight jackets, long-sleeve tees, skirts and dresses, while dotted motifs appeared on a tonal mint green leather tee and shorts, skinny jeans and even layered over stripes. And as grunge is nearly synonymous with camouflage, Jacobs sprinkled in an abstract version seen on belted dresses, jackets and capes. Pumps even sported the re-styled material. Relaxed silhouettes of midi-dresses, oversized knits, shorts and jumpers rounded out the assortment with playful geometric patterns and bright energetic colors. The styling took a hint from the high-low, mix-and-match, soft-versus-hard juxtaposition approach mastered by music festival fashionistas.

In the playful mood that he was, Jacobs’ sense of humor was exposed in memorable moments throughout the collection. His popular mouse-eared flats reappeared as pumps and his face even made an appearance on a sweatshirt, thanks to a portrait from his younger days by Elizabeth Peyton, as reported by Style.com. The limited edition sweatshirt and tees are, without a doubt, destined to be collector’s items.
