Pre-Fall 2013 Trends: Coats & Jackets

Cool fall weather offers endless ways to show off your latest and greatest toppers. We love a jacket or coat as it’s a great “cheat” piece to instantly upgrade the simplest ensemble and make you look instantly pulled together. Here are some of our favorite trends from the Pre-Fall collections that will continue to sizzle across the Fall 2013 runways and beyond.

Animal Prints

Animal prints remain strong and really are a neutral for the style-confident woman. Head-to-toe animal prints were common for pre-Fall but you may want to opt for a fabulous topper and keep the rest of your ensemble neutral. The animal kingdom was well represented by cowhide, zebra, giraffe and of course, leopard.

Motorcycle Jackets

Moto-style jackets were shown in a variety of silhouettes from oversized to super-fitted and fabrications from leather to mixed media. This style is a great way to add modernity to the most conservative of wardrobes without looking like you ride a Harley.

Color

A variety of toppers were also shown in bold colors from a range of designers. Black is a must-have for most of us but a great coat in a bold blue or orange will seem so refreshing on cold and dreary days. Check out some of our favorite standouts in a rainbow of colors.

Capes

Capes continued their march down the runways for Pre-Fall and were even shown during Men’s Fashion Week. Capes are always a dramatic option, yet rendered wearable with armholes and front closures. This season’s tailored iterations were offered in leather, fur, mixed media, oversize prints and menswear-inspired pieces.

Oversize

Oversized and voluminous silhouettes were also a prominent trend this season. For outerwear, the intentionally oversized coat from Fall 2012 continued to be popular for many designers. Silhouettes were away from the body, cocoon-like or boxy. Oversized collars added to the dramatic effect. Just think how skinny your legs will look in comparison!
