NYFW Trends - Footwear
In the past couple seasons, shoes have been causing quite the stir at fashion week. They have been super studded, ridiculously tall and caused some fallen catwalk moments. This past week though in New York, designers have mellowed out 90’s style in the shoe department and have taken a turn towards basics.
Instead of the towering stilettos, designers like Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Calvin Klein have opted for chunkier heels and column heels. For pumps, platforms and boots, the heels are getting thicker and the uppers are simplifying. Designers have finally stepped away from the studs, spikes, chains and S&M looks and focused on lacing, stitching and simple buckles. Pumps shown have classic cuts with rich materials, making great staples for every wardrobe. Booties and over-the-ankle booties are still present for another season as shown by Derek Lam, Philip Lim, and Narciso Rodriguez. While there were still some show-stopping thigh-high boots, designers also toned it down with mid to knee length boots with wider openings and loose, more slouchy, baggy feels. Boots looked most rich in tan or grey leather. Calvin Klein and Michael Kors continued forth with lug soles for a little roughed up feeling on boots and platforms.
And probably most talked about are Proenza Schouler’s wooden platforms with the chunky banana heel, a complete departure from what we have previously seen on runway. The saddle shoes are reminiscent of the ‘70s and ‘90s and feel fresher than ever.
Looks like it’s time to update the shoe closet…
