NYFW Spring 2013 runway trends: harnesses
Fast on the New York Spring 2013 runways, designers are showing a bold trend with harnesses. The idea of the body accessory is perhaps a lingering idea from Fall 2012’s dark, edgy themes but with a softer sensibility. This season, gone were the intricate styles with heavy hardware that usually come with the S&M accessory. The reinvented harnesses showed thinned out straps, restructured configurations and were offered in white for a fresh take. Additionally, designers unexpectedly styled the accessory over feminine dresses and piles of tulle.
At BCBG Max Azria, Max and Lubov Azria centered the Spring collection around the restraints made for day or night. Leather versions in black or white displayed a wide range of patterns that effortlessly harmonized with crepe dresses and gowns.
On the runways of Jason Wu, the New York designer collaborated with lingerie brand La Perla for an aggressive series of leather and lace looks completed with the dominating ornament. Wu’s adaptation revealed skinny straps in a simple suspender strap arrangement that added just enough edge to sheath daydresses and presented contrast to evening gowns of beaded bodices and tulle skirts.
Mandy Coon’s harnesses also found a similar minimalism. The suspender style in traditional black rounded out sassy dresses and even crop top and flared skirt combinations. Coon further referenced the dominatrix styling with crisscrossing straps in a deep V-neck dress.
