At NYFW: Military-Inspired Looks

NYFW newcomer, Wes Gordon, wowed the audience with his fine fabrics and hand-finished details. His collection featured whimsical dresses with lots of movement, as well as more structured pieces such as cropped pants and sharp-lined jackets. This chic, double-breasted military green vest, paired with a flowing white minidress and accentuated with a gorgeous burgundy red belt, is a premier example of this young designer’s impeccable tailoring and perfect fits.

Elie Tahari is known for creating effortless and luxurious ready-to-wear collections and this season was no different. Models stomped the runway in beautiful streamlined pieces, including white button-down tops, cotton canvas trenches and simple silk dresses. In this look, the designer combines a sophisticated taupe blazer with a popped collar and skinny leather belt over a gorgeous, shimmering gold pleated dress, feminizing this military-inspired look.

If there was one spring collection that perfectly mixed the masculine with the feminine, it would have to have been Ruffian. Designers behind the brand, Brian Wolk and Claude Morais, used Susan Travers, the only woman to serve officially with the French Foreign Legion, as their inspiration. Drawing from her diplomatic field, Wolk and Morais created polished military looks that featured ambassador jackets lined with brass buttons, clean A-line skirts, high-waisted canvas trousers and gorgeous satin blouses. This particular look is a glamorized take on a business outfit. A beautiful forest-green satin blouse, twisted at the waistline, is tucked into high-waisted, full-legged, taupe trousers. The ensemble is complete with a glistening light-gold jacket.
