Two years ago, Meghna Patel decided to leave her corporate job to return to her roots and revisit her true love of art. Committing herself to jewelry design, she created her own line of Indian-inspired jewelry, appropriately named Meghna Designs.

Since 2011, Meghna Designs has offered exclusive jewelry pieces intended to complete any woman’s ensemble with exceptional earrings, necklaces, cuffs, bangles and rings to choose from.

“I have always loved to do freehand drawings. I never knew that my interest in art would tie into creating jewelry. Drawing was always something that came naturally to me and that’s what inspired me to create jewelry designs. I wanted to take my passion of art and mix it with fashion and create something rather different. I had a corporate job for 10 years at Motorola as a Quality Auditor and, after giving up that career two years ago, I wanted to do something that I would enjoy doing. Being able to do something you love and making that as your career is like a dream come true,” said Patel.

She grew up in India and came to the US at the age of 16. Inspired by the beautiful and colorful stones embellished in Indian jewelry, her collection is a blend of her Indian heritage mixed with modern flair, all handcrafted with cubic zirconia, crystals and precious stones by artisans in India.

Each piece from the Meghna Designs jewelry collections, Geodes and Taj Mahal, will create a dazzling experience for women. The Geodes collection of necklaces, rings, cuffs, bangles and earrings is bold and beyond colorful. The bright but simple hues are true attention-grabbers. The Taj Mahal collection is intricately designed and overly ornate. Inspired from one of the Seven Wonders of the World, this collection resembles the royal and beautiful motifs carved in the Taj Mahal walls by fine artisans. The mix of art deco and modern royalty in each pair of earrings creates pleasing, exotic embellishments.

“In three words if I could explain my line it’s bold, beautiful and chic. There is something for everyone. You can find beautiful, intricate and modern Indian- inspired designs in the Taj Mahal collection. Our Geodes collection has bold and beautiful pieces. I design for anyone who loves fashion, or loves to be fashionable, and someone who counts on their accessories to finish a look. A beautiful pair of earrings or a cuff can be an important finishing touch,” she said.

Patel creates each unique piece organically by starting from scratch. No graphic designing or computer drawing is used when she designs her jewelry creations.

“I create my designs organically by sketching on a piece of paper and explaining details to my manufacturer for plating, stone colors and materials. The final products go through several stages before they are perfect in my vision,” said Patel.

She is careful with choosing the colors and hues to use in her designs. Like most Indian jewelry pieces, Patel’s are vibrant but are even more eye-catching because of her use of different materials and stones.

“I love taking risks in creating something different. Our resin leaf earrings and the Bora Bora cuffs are great statement pieces. Since I am into colors, creating striking color combinations is my signature. I would like to expand my line further by creating a lot more designs in each category,” Patel said.

She receives constant inspiration for her designs from anything that she falls in love with at first sight.

“It can be a beautiful painting, full of color, or a fabric with unique motifs which I can later incorporate into my jewelry,” said Patel.

Meghna Designs are currently available in the US. She is in the process of making her jewelry available internationally and placing it in various domestic boutiques.

“I don’t have a degree or formal training but I am very much passionate about sketching unique designs and combining that with different color combination. I believe that if you have a passion for something, find a way to do it. Believe in yourself and don’t give up,” Patel ended.
