Spring/Summer 2014: The Ballerina Suit Trend

Taking the feminine ballerina silhouette to the water

The weather is slowly warming up and if you're not heading to Coachella next weekend, take some time to get your swimwear style together by adding a new trend such as the graceful and playful silhouette of the ballerina suit. This trend is feminine and flirty as a ruffle bikini top or bottom, or a one-piece suit with a skirt overlay; reminiscent of a ballerina's tutu. If a ballerina-inspired one piece or ruffle bikini top is not your style, try a cover-up that has a skirt detail.

One-Piece

A one-piece suit with peplum, ruffle, or skirt overlay is a great way to translate the ballerina suit trend. The one-piece bathing suit itself mimics a ballerina's leotard, and the peplum, ruffle, or skirt overlay as atake on a dancer skirt or tutu. Designer Lenny Niemeyer presented a strong and structured graphic one-piece bathing suit with exaggerated peplum for an unforgettable swimwear look. Try a tamed version of the bathing suit like Juicy Couture's or Marc by Marc Jacobs' retro-like printed, ruffle versions, or Zinke's sophisticated but flirty strapless black bathing suit with a peplum detail. Add an oversized sun hat and sunglasses, a chiffon cover up, and sandals or espadrille wedges for a complete look.

Bikini Top

To accentuate more on the top, wear a ruffle strapped or strapless bikini top with coordinating or printed bottoms. The more volume or ruffles, the better. Designer Ter et Bantine created a simple yet bold bikini featuring a strapless, almost-floating ruffle around the model's body. Translate this trend into your swimwear wardrobe with tops from Eberjey, Tori Praver and Zinke; all have different necklines but possess a fun, flouncy shape.

Bikini Bottom

If you have your stapless bikini top or a certain shape that you usually like to wear, try the trend with a skirted or ruffle bottom. Designer Zimmermann showcased a stunning two-piece of graphic, metallic and ruffle proportions. The skirted bottom added great volume to the model's sleek and form fitting top. Grab your own bottoms from OndadeMar, Tory Burch and Zimmermann; have fun styling different styles, colors, and cuts of tops.

Cover-Up

A beach bbq, poolside party, or any event involving water is not complete without a cover-up. Whether you're wearing the ballerina suit trend or your favorite swimwear underneath; the cover-up can still evoke the trend with a ruffle hem or attached skirt.
