Fall Couture 2012: Elie Saab
When it comes to elegant red carpet looks, Elie Saab is a seasoned expert. He dazzled us with his ethereal Spring 2012 Couture collection, boasting pastel-colored sparkling gowns and a stunning modern bride look. For Fall Couture 2012, Saab continued the sparkles but with a slightly different mood. As reported by Style.com, “Constantinople’s Wake” was the name and theme of the show.
The line-up of 46 couture looks didn’t stray far from his usual program of sashaying evening gowns, cocktail dresses and wedding dress finales. Evening gowns in vivid colors of teal, pale blue and pink floated down the runway in light, delicate materials embroidered with a healthy dose of beads, paillettes, crystals and sequins – quintessential Saab. Chantilly lace, crepe and silk jacquards were decadent with good leaves creating a striking contrast. The styles varied from caftans to long-sleeve creations with dramatic slits to sleeveless turtleneck looks. Skirts were cinched at the waist and filled with tulle volume, or sleek and column-like.
Saab’s cocktail dresses boasted fit-and-flare shapes, midi styles and even a peplum. Long-sleeves offered an extra note of elegance, appropriate for Fall evenings. The looks explored the same luxe materials as the gowns but felt less red carpet.
The finale look was enchanting, as always for the designer, with a Cinderella ball gown complete with a Cathedral veil. The champagne-colored dress was detailed with gold leafs, crystals and beads from the lace bodice down to the billowing skirt. It was a romantic yet modern take on non-traditional white gowns.
Saab’s couture collections may be formulaic, but are stunners nonetheless. Besides, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
