Fall 2012 trends: bejeweled
In Fall 2012, opulence is golden. Designers took lux to the next level by bejeweling apparel, accessories and footwear with enough stones, gems and paillettes to make statement necklaces look minimalistic. Embellished trims were highly exaggerated while all-over or oversized ornaments were essential. Miuccia Prada fully embraced the concept with rock crystals adorning menswear-inspired looks in Prada’s collection and oversized mirrored appliqués blanketing cocktail A-line dresses for Miu Miu. On Oscar de la Renta’s runway, the story was photo print jeweled fabrics transforming classic cardigans, coats and pencil skirts. Alber Elbaz celebrated his tenth anniversary at Lanvin with sparkling encrusted shift dresses. The idea of minimalism is abandoned this season as head-to-toe bejeweled styling encourages a “more is more” aesthetic.
Marni’s oversized mint green floral t-shirt can go day-to-night with its decorated collar of white rhinestones. The top is further enhanced with flowery stitching through silver, white, pastel blue and pastel orange. Stick to the theme of opulence by pairing it with metallic gold or silver pants and a sharp blazer. High-heeled sandals round out the ensemble.
Prada’s jeweled clutch is all razzle-dazzle. The satin style is encrusted with gemstones in varying sizes for a decadent appearance. Use it to accessorize an LBD for a perfect evening look. The hand-held piece can also effortlessly glam up simple outfits of denim jeans.
Nasty Gal’s jeweled cutoff shorts blend lux with a bit of distressed styling. The faded classic Levi’s boast baroque, studded and colorful jeweled details. Combine the shorts with an understated t-shirt and an anorak for a cool juxtaposition of trends. Over-the-ankle booties seal the deal.
There’s no reason why heels can’t be embellished for some fancy feet. Prada steps it up with the jeweled satin d’orsay platforms. The purple satin is bejeweled with crystals, beads and gems. Spotlight the retro silhouette with skinny pants or a mini skirt.
McQ Alexander McQueen’s black metal embroidered dress is edgy sophistication. The sleeveless stretch dress is adorned with metallic grey embroidery at the shoulders, bodice and back, giving the LBD a new attitude. Add a hint of color with oxblood red heeled sandals.
Oscar de la Renta gives cardigans a lavish twist with beaded details. The cashmere and silk sweater features faux pearl buttons, a jeweled neckline and crystal ornaments. Layer the cardigan over a black ensemble of leather pants and sleeveless top. For a refined appeal, drape it over the shoulders with evening cocktail attire.
No one does extravagance like Versace. The Italian designer goes over the top with a constructed bodice enhanced with vinyl inserts and an oversized jeweled cross. The structured gothic-inspired look is balanced with a pencil skirt and pointed toe pumps.
Vince Camuto offers a romantic feel with the jeweled trim Peter Pan blouse. The simple sheer top is jazzed up with stones decorating the collar and cuffs. An easy staple, the blouse layered over a tank top works well with trousers for a daytime office ensemble or with a dark purple skirt for a dinner date.
