Trees for the Future Creates Environmental Hope By Tree Planting
In the spirit of Earth Day, ecological and environmental organizations everywhere are coming together for the sole purpose of helping to save the earth. Trees for the Future is one of these organizations that remind everyone that Earth Day symbolizes environmental hope and that the act of planting trees helps to save lives.
Based out of Silver Springs, Md., Trees for the Future has planted more than 80 million trees worldwide since its founding in 1989. The nonprofit has helped to create sustainable and productive communities throughout the globe through agroforestry. The organization teaches agriculture and sustainable land management practices that help feed people and allow poor famers to gain income.
Trees for the Future continues to educate the public why planting trees is so important for the environment. New trees change lives by providing food, forage for animals, and wood and fuel for construction. They also increase agricultural yields, improve water filtration and aquifer recharge, and protect soils from wind and water erosion. But planting trees can become difficult when the canopy has disappeared, topsoil has eroded and the climate has changed growing conditions. Trees for the Future works toward helping communities in desperate need of transforming their environment and preparing it for tree planting again.
By teaching and empowering, rural groups are able to grow renewable forests for agriculture, firewood, construction, water collection and filtration and animal habitat. Trees for the Future completes this education through free distance training programs and teams of dedicated individuals in the field who train, support and facilitate hope for community members to improve their lives.
Through the Trees for the Future's worldwide network of technicians, volunteers and community leaders, the organization has helped more than 1 million people in thousands of communities in more than 20 countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. In addition to helping internationally, Trees for the Future is also active in the United States, educating students and communities about global environmental issues, their role in the environment and energy efficiency.
Within approximately six months, the planted seeds will turn Asian, African and Latin American villages into sustainable, productive communities. New trees will not only keep livestock in their proper fields but will also provide shade and help stabilize soil. Farmers' brand new crops will provide food, firewood, ground water and livelihood for their villages.
The 2013 Trees for the Future Plan of Action calls for helping more than 200,000 men, women and children—with extra assistance from 522 local organizations and partnerships in 1,600 communities—by providing the seeds, tools and training they need to plant 20 million trees.
“Our work … is truly people-to-people work, connecting individuals and communities across the globe in a shared drive towards a better future,” states the Trees for the Future 2013 Action Plan.
Partners helping to make the organization’s duties easier include a range of well-known companies such as Amana, Canon, Etnies and Pottery Barn Teen.
In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, Trees for the Future has been posting special Earth Day campaigns on its Facebook page. The more people like the page, the more trees the organization and partners will plant this year.
Earth Day is just another reminder of how important safeguarding the environment is for the world’s and humankind’s existence. Trees for the Future does everything in its power to make sure that we all have a future that should be looked forward to every day.
