Opium, not the typical word one would gravitate towards when getting ready to announce a new luxury product to consumers. Especially in the late 70s, when it’s destiny was to be the name of an opulent perfume inclined to engulf the senses in rapture and ecstasy. A tad odd and seemingly insensitive, Opium incited cultural backlash and bucked illicit norms, but the ingenious Yves Saint Laurent was not shy about charting his creative course when establishing this exotic namesake for the 1977 fragrance.

Thirty-three years later, The House of YSL is launching a new version of Opium this summer, Belle d’Opium—to be released in the fall of 2010. Just like the scent that came before this modern version, the original 1977 “scent”-sation was a classic hit! Opium, containing top notes of fruits and spices like mandarin orange, plum, clove, coriander and pepper—mid notes of jasmine, rose, Lily of the Valley, cinnamon and peach—and rounding out the bottom with sweet base notes containing sandalwood, vanilla, cedar wood, myrrh, amber, musk and patchouli are just some of the ingredients that seduce the senses when one dresses the skin in the famous fragrance from yesteryear.
